April 1st - The beginning of something new

April 1st at 12:00 pm 5:00pm is when we take possession of our home.
This has been a looooong time coming.

To say that I am excited is an understatement. I seriously want to break out in song and dance every time that I talk about this...I am just that stoked.

Gone are the days where we have to pay for venues for birthday parties, have our family over in shifts (yes our condo was THAT small) and squash our wonderful abilities to entertain, cook, craft and DIY our hearts out.

This is all going to change. We have room to live and be a family (and grow it) . We have room to cook. We have room to entertain. We have room to CREATE!!

Stay tuned for some amazing posts because things are about to get a little bit more AWESOME!

How shopping auctions will save you money.

When Kris and I first got married we furnished part of our condo for $400.00 and the majority of our purchases were brand new

Table & 4 chairs
How did we get these items for so cheap?

Futon
Easy! Auctions are also places where show homes take their items once the houses have sold. Overstock from businesses and of course treasures from personal consignments as well. These prices are generally a fraction of the prices that you would normally pay through retail.

What auctions do we shop?
Our favourite one to shop is Kastner Auctions. They have a convenient online auction option so you can bid on items from the comport of your own home.

Important things to consider

You always have to register at the auction, make sure you bring a credit card with you as it is a requirement. You will be given a bidder number and this is how your purchases are tracked by the auctioneers.

Pick a place that allows you to view items before the auction. Kastner Auctions is open on Saturdays so you can view the items. Auctions take place on Sundays. This is also good for you to research your prices.

Know that you are at times taking chances. If there isn't an option to view items before hand there is a chance they are broken and a piece of crap. Case and point the time Kris bought a pressure washer that had no pressure - thankfully that was only a $10 mistake.

You have to be comfortable with not having the comfort of a warranty.

Don't get caught up in the hype and shop impulsively- they want you to, but set the price you're willing to pay for an item and don't go beyond that

Brush up on your auction etiquette. There are some great tips here.

What are some awesome deals I have gotten from the auction??

In 2011 we purchased a electric reclining sectional and we also wanted to buy the reclining chair ($1000) that went along with it but decided to wait. Two months later the exact same chair was at the auction and we only paid $300. (It still had the tags on)

We recently just purchased a dining room table for our new house for $40.

In our condo we purchased a brand new overhead range microwave for $80. (Retail upwards to $600)

Do you have a favourite auction to shop at or have you gotten some killer deals?

Left over coffee! What do you do with it?

Have you ever made a pot of coffee and then had some left over?
Then what, most people just dump it down the drain!

Don't throw it out, save it!

All you need is an ice cube tray and a freezer.
Pour the left over coffee into the ice cube tray and pop it into the freezer.
Once they are frozen put the cubes into a freezer bag to keep them together.

What can the frozen coffee be use for?

  • We use frozen coffee for Iced Coffee Drinks- Chocolate Soy milk mixed with coffee cubes make a great refreshing summer drink.
  • Be creative and make different ones- Ice Coffee, Frapicuinnos, Frozen coffee/hot chocolate drinks.
  • Recipes that call for coffee in baking, icing, ice cream, even marinades for meat. Use your imagination. (Tiramisu is my favorite)
  • Reheat it if you are in a bind for a hot cup of coffee.
Really anything that you would like to have coffee flavouring in, is what you can use the frozen coffee for.

Yummmmm!!!!!

Don't forget the coffee grinds- they can be reused too. They are great for compost. Also check out the the Organic Authority website and their post on 4 ways to include coffee grounds into your beauty routine.

Making a plan when moving!

Taken from Mommy Tracked website
This weekend Kris and I went on a much needed date night.
We haven't gone on one for at least a month and we also needed to have some alone adult time to make a plan for our move next week.

Lists are a definite must for me. I am a compulsive note taker, I take notes about taking notes- yea..... I know.

So what are some things that I find have helped us or will help us?

  1. If you have kids or pets make plans for someone to watch them. (If possible)
  2. Setting realistic time lines. We are NOT going to get 3 rooms painted in 1 day, with all necessary coats of paint. It is just not possible.
  3. If you can, have a moving party/ cleaning party. Provide a pizza and beer feast AFTER everything is done. (Who wants a drunkie painting your walls...am I right? )
  4. Plan to clean the place that you are moving out of after all stuff has been moved out. This way you can clean a room and not go back in and you can work yourself out. This won't really work for us, but it kind of makes send don't you think??
  5. If you can plan to clean the place that you are moving into as well. The first thing I am cleaning are the bathrooms, specifically the toilets.
  6. Have a designated place for everything. Where the mail will go. Where the keys will go. STICK WITH IT. You will thank me for this suggestion later.
  7. Don't be afraid to purge. Living with a lot of items in my storage unit that were not accessable made me think that there will be a lot of things that go right into a garage sale pile, dump pile, and donate pile. It feels good just thinking about it.
Taken from Mommy Tracked website
Another thing we have decided to do it set house rules. We have been living in a sort of chaos for about a year. We moved in with my mom after we sold our condo and while it has been great it has also been crowded and we have fallen out of our old routines. New routines have to be created.
One thing in, means one thing out. Cleaning on certain nights and table rules. All of it. Being consistent helps. And having Carter & Sophie helping out is a must!!!

If you have any tips for moving successfully please share them. I need all the help that I can get.

Until next time! :)

GeoCaching - Life's real treasure hunt for the whole family.

Information taken from Wikipedia

A few years ago we started Geocaching after Kris learned about it while on a business trip. Armed with an iPhone, a Geocache App , some trinkets (see suggestions below) to replace with trinkets found, and a pen to sign the books left in the Geocaches we started the fun. The first time we found two Geocaches and Carter was so excited!
Since then we have gone Geocaching ALOT and it has been a great FREE activity to do as a family while getting some fresh air and exercise.
Its the best of all worlds.

Getting started is so easy.
You will need:
Portable GPS or Iphone/Android- Apps can be downloaded for your iPhone, Android, Windows phone.

If you are looking for more information here are some great local Geocaching resources.
GeoCaching Edmonton
City of Edmonton GeoCaching Course/Information sessions

Going with small kids? Make it even more fun by pretending that you and your family are pirates on a treasure hunt looking for treasures.

*Make sure to bring some trinkets and a pen when you go Geocaching*

Trinket ideas-
Small toys (smaller then a Kinder surprise)
Marbles
Fortunes
Quotes
Jokes
Use your imagination

Wondering where to go Geocaching?? EVERYWHERE
Go on a walk and see what you can find. Even better- this can even be an activity in other places that you visit. Towns, cities, camping..

Have you tried Geocaching before or have you tried it because of this post??I would love to hear about your GeoCaching experiences!!

To my Mommy friends- Thank you.

I recently saw a video on www.ted.com and it talked about celebrating the now. Telling people that they are important to you not just on the special days but EVERY day.

When I had Carter I was a first time mom. I was lonely. I was bored. I decided that I wanted to join a mom's group and joined a few through meetup.com. I was kicked out of one for not being able to attend meetups with my newborn (nope can't go swimming with a newborn). I was not welcome in another one, (some mommies can be mean- can't we all just get along??)..

So I made a bold move I started my own moms group.

I lived in North Edmonton right by Beaumaris Lake, and conveniently named the group "The Beaumaris Lake Mommies and Daddies walking group" we met every Thursday morning and walked around the lake (Londonderry mall during the winter). There were a lot of people that joined the online group, less that joined us in person, and about 6-7 of us that were constants. I resurrected the group when I had Sophie and I was lucky enough to meet some more great ladies, my business partner attended it too (we knew each other since high school but it was still great) and some from the first group had their second children during that time too.
A mix of wonderful amazing moms ( and a dad for a short period of time hence the "and daddies" in the name)... What would I have done without them? They saved me.

I don't mean saved as in I needed an intervention. I mean they saved me as in it became more than just walks, we blossomed into friends. Some of us have one kid, some of us two, some are expecting the third. We go camping together. Go to movies together. We hang out as a group when we can - mostly at birthdays as between all of us we have 12 parties. (I call it the birthday season, which starts in February and goes until September) Christmas get togethers and everything in between.

These ladies are important to me and I know that had it not been for them I don't think I would be the person I am today. I am lucky. I am blessed. I am grateful for each and every one of them.

When I started my moms group it was scary, I alone had organized this group. It all depended on me and it was like going on a group blind date for the first few times. But I did it, and would not change a thing. My suggestion to every mom I meet is that they should seek something out. Whether it is joining a play group at your local church, starting your own mom's group, or joining an already organized group, DO IT.  It will provide some much need sanity.

If you are looking for an organized moms group check out these ones. They are run by awesome ladies, and offer awesome programs.
Want to hang out with the mommies from your moms group but not really sure how to approach it? Try these ice breakers.
Ask if they want to have a play date.
Go to a place such as Java Mama or Café O Play the kids can play and you can have a latte!
Go swimming or go for a walk.
Just remember, every mom (or dad)  is where you are because they too are looking to be part of something.

A quick no bake cheese cake for a last minute dessert - don't even bother figuring out the calories in this...

Last night we went to Kris's parents for dinner and Kris (the brains behind some of the AWESOME recipes that I will share with you) made a no bake cheese cake.
Now Kris has a love for all things cooking and no things baking - which works well for us because I rock at baking and love Love LOVE to bake.
( I am totally that person organizing the work baking exchange as early as possible)

However, last night Kris definitely impressed.
Armed with a store bought pre made graham crust he gathered the rest of the ingredients for the filling. (You can make your own graham crust, my fav is from the Hillbilly Housewife)
  • 2 bricks of plain cream cheese - room temp
  • 1 tub of Cool Whip
  • 1/2 cup of icing sugar
Fold (not whip or stir) the ingredients together until all 3 ingredients are mixed well
Pour filling into graham crust and refrigerate until its time for dessert
(The filling is good for 2-3 cheese cakes)

We used cherry pie filling as a topping and YUMM!

There are so many options for adding more flavour to this recipe- try adding lemon juice for something a little more tart or chocolate sauce for something more sweet!

This is definitely something for the quick and easy section of your recipe box!

My favorite compact stroller.

Carter in the first Combi - 2011
Combi
Anytime I see a Facebook post asking for opinions about strollers for travelling or if I am having a conversation about the best stroller for compact travel I always tell people about our Combi stroller.
I love it. We are on our 2nd one now (the airline lost the first one) and it is one of the best purchases that we have made.

We came upon a Combi, because we were going to be travelling and we needed something that we could use in the airport during our lay overs and our huge honking stroller just was not an option.

We of course had other requirements.
Back folded up
  • It had to be comfortable to push for my over 6ft tall hubby
  • It had to have some storage - enough room to at least fit Carter's diaper bag
  • It had to be able to recline back a little as we knew we were going to be on the go a lot and Carter would still need to nap
  • It had to be compact and light enough to travel with
  • It had to be budget friendly
Sophie in the 2nd Combi - 2014

Front folded up

After some online research we headed to
Babies 'R' Us to test out strollers and instantly fell in love with the Combi. It had everything we wanted for a price we could afford (it was on sale for $75)... This stroller has travelled with friends and family across Canada, to Disney World, Philadelphia, New York and Mexico..and it didn't disappoint.

Bottom line- if you are looking for a stroller for travelling this is definitely one to consider.
Want to know more about this stroller?
Check out the Toys 'R' Us and Combi websites.

St. Patricks Day - Celebrating with the "Copycat Shamrock Shake"

We do not normally do anything big on St. Patricks day, this year especially since we are gearing up to move into our house in a few weeks!

I wanted to look into a fun treat for the kids to help make and I came across the Copycat Shamrock Shake on the Passion for Savings website!

This is definitely what we will be making!!!

**For an alternative to a green food colouring you can use matcha powder or spinach juice**

Birthday Party Crafts- Wooden Masks- Simple, Budget friendly, FUN!

Recently Carter has shown a lot of interest in crafts. His birthday is also a little over a month away!
Let me tell you - the creative juices are flowing! Pair this with my love for planning and saving money and this will create some awesome blog posts!

What to buy?

Wooden Masks- Purchased them from Dollarama for $1 each. They can also be purchased at Michaels for $1.50 each.

Acrylic Paint - I purchased the mini tubes (in the above picture) from Dollarama for $2. They are good if you are planning small crafts. If you are doing this for a bigger group I suggest buying the 2oz bottles. These can be purchased at Dollarama for $1 each but you can also buy them at Michaels.

**Michaels frequently has them on sale for 2/$1! You can also use their weekly coupons by printing them off of their website or getting the app for your phone**

Paint Brushes - Can buy these at Dollarama $2 for a variety of pack. (Can be purchased for a variety of different stores in the craft section- Walmart, Michaels, Target, London Drugs etc.)

Paper Plates - To use as a palate to hold your paint

Use your imagination
Buy certain masks for certain themes (jungle party, pirate party, princess party, garden party etc.)
Create a DIY photo booth and use the masks as props
Glam up the princess masks with jewels
Add sparkles to the flower or butterfly
Use yarn or feathers in the areas for hair

Buy the basics create the rest!
By buying just Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, and White paint you can create others colours.
Red + Blue = Purple
Red + White = Pink
Blue + Yellow = Green
Yellow+ Red = Orange
Red + Green = Brown
Green + Blue = Turquoise

I would love to hear how you made this project your own!

Lets talk consignment!

Last week I had the wonderful opportunity to present to a Mommy Connection's mom's group here in Edmonton about all things consignment.

It was a great experience, something that I would love to do again.

For the presentation that I gave I put together a list of all consignment sales in and around Edmoton from now until October 2014. The compiled list which is in order of months and dates can be found on the page I've Outgrown It Sales 2014

**If you know of a list that is not on there, please let me know**

Some of the dates Jessie (my business partner) and I will be in attendance with our Maternity Consignment business Bun in the Oven Consignment (so come and say hi if you see us :) )

I have also developed a list of tips and tricks of preparing for consigning clothes, consignment in general, as well as shopping consignment. This document is in a pdf file and you can download it and use it for your convenience. It is on the page called Tips & Tricks for Consignment

Hopefully this is a useful tool for you, and I would love to hear your feedback!

Domestic & International flights - This may be your answer to getting cheaper flights!

When should I book my flight to get the best deal?

It's a question that so many people want to know but there is no clear cut answer to... Or is there?

Last week news channels near and far were reporting on the recent findings from Cheapair. The post called "When to ignore our advice and book your flight as early as possiblegathered information from many flights booked through their website in 2013 and reported their findings on their blog this past January.

Cheapair found that when booking domestic flights "Prime booking" is between 29-104 days, with the best day to book flights being 54 days before the day that you want to travel (The difference in savings was as high as $312)

For destinations that are popular year round Cheapair suggested booking 3-5 weeks earlier then the 54 day suggestion.

Cheapair also identified that there are different time frames to consider for international flights. It is suggested that booking at least 100 days in advance is desirable. They also listed some specifics when going to certain continents.
  • South Pacific -70 days in advance
  • Africa 166 days in advance
  • Mexico - 89 days in advance
  • Europe - 151 days in advance
  • Asia - 129 days in advance
  • Caribbean - 101 days in advance
Travel during major holidays
(US Thanksgiving, Christmas, Spring Break etc.)
According to the numbers in 2013 June 2nd was pegged as the day to book flights for these major holidays. To learn more in-depth information check out their blog post "What we learned about holiday airfares

Something else that was identified was the worst times to book your flights. Cheapair suggested that based on gathered data the worst days to book are:
1. The day before
2. The second day before
3. Continuing up to 13 days before your desired day to fly

Bottom line- With all of this being said it is important to know the market. So start your research as early as you can and check back often. And good luck! :)

Do you have other tips for booking flights? A great travel agent? Share, share, share away..

**There is a lot of information and it is important to consider that this information is based on a US company findings, however when this story aired on one of the newscast channels here in Edmonton it was still suggested that these tips could also help Canadian travellers get the best prices possible*

Apple TV, US Netflix, & Hulu - this is why we are not going with mainstream cable this time around!!

In 23 days we take possession of our house....23
days.... there are so many things to do and picking a "cable" provider is one of them.

We are choosing to go through Apple TV and also signing up for US Netflix again.
We will also be signing up for Hulu Plus eliminating the need for us to subscribe to regular cable and off setting the amount internet is now going to cost- cause holy crap pricing has changed in just a year. Hulu Plus will make it so that we can watch current shows within the week of them airing which is okay because we are not "need to watch the television show on the night of it airing" kind of people. It also has a great database of past seasons for television shows.

Signing up for US Netflix is actually not as much of an ordeal as it was even a year ago. Basically you just need to make Netflix think you are in the US instead of Canada. And if you follow the basic steps...it is SO EASY!

To get Netflix to think that you are in the US you need to register for a company that acts as the hub that makes your IP address look like your internet connection is coming through the US.
I am choosing to use Blockless because after some research and reading online reviews I have come to the conclusion that this is the program with the best streamline and the least amount of problems.

It also gives us access to MANY other popular viewing options.

Costs for everything:
Apple TV costs $109 to buy (At your local Apple store and a one time purchase). We have one already so this cost is null for us. We do however have to invest ANOTHER remote as they go missing - (they are probably with all of Sophie's missing socks)
Apple TV remote - $21.00
HDMI Cable- $39.99 - You can purchase these at Future Shop, Best Buy, Walmart, etc..
Blockless account - $4.95 USD/month
Netflix US- $7.99 USD/month
Hulu Plus - $7.99 USD/month

All of this together is less then 2 months of cable through local providers... :/
Not including the Apple TV, the remote and HDMI cables the amount to pay per month is OVER 60% savings!!!

There are many options out there but this fits the best for our family. Do you have other ways that you save with cable?
