Bringing back Drive-In Movies - The Silver Spur Drive-In #yeg #yegmovies #familyfun

DriveInScreen

Do you remember drive in movies? Families, couples, friends - something for everyone.

What if I told you that there is a business in Edmonton that is trying to bring back the Drive-In? The Silver Spur Drive-In is doing just that!!

Some of my fondest childhood memories are from going to the drive in with my family and friends.
Packing as many blankets and pillows that you could grab (and fit into the vehicle) to make you comfy for that double feature. Backing up a truck so you could watch the movie under the stars or a van with the back hatch up.
Even those not so fun times where your sister was allowed to sit in the front seat and your seat was directly behind her with a headrest in your direct line of sight and you spent the whole movie craning your head from left to right to watch the movie. Okay maybe not everyone experienced the later but I am sure I am not the only one......?!!

Be in the know about Silver Spur Drive-In...

Make sure that you sign up for their newsletter to receive up to date information for the upcoming Drive-In movie dates! Also don't forget to follow them on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram

See you at the Drive-In!

Egg decorating that's #easy & #kidfriendly

On my most recent trip to Walmart I found these little gems! Dudley Plastic eggsCarter and Sophie love decorating eggs and I like the idea of having eggs that won't crack.  The $2 price tag is also pretty decent - even cheaper than a dozen eggs!

These eggs can be used with regular egg decorations dye or you can make your own dye. They are also 100% recyclable!

Don't want to use dye to decorate your eggs??
Try these materials to decorate your eggs!

  • Markers
  • Crayons
  • Stickers
  • Acrylic Paint
  • Sparkles (at your own risk..)
  • Pinterest also has some great ideas!

Stay tuned for another post this week for our Ukrainian Easter Eggs!!

Busy bags to keep kids entertained! #imagination #diy #busybag #keepthembusy #kids #travel

Back when I was on maternity leave with Sophie a fellow mommy friend organized a busy bag swap! The idea behind busy bags are DIY activities that can be reused by your children  at home, road trips, air plane rides, restaurants, doctors offices and the lists go on...

How to plan a busy bag swap of your own!
  • Get a group of around 10 people to participate.
  • Decide what busy bag activity each person is going to make and what age group the activities the busy bags will be geared towards.
  • Decide on your budget for making the busy bags.
  • Each person makes the busy bag activity for every person participating and as the participant you receive busy bag activity from all the other participants.
  • Pick a day/time to do the busy bag swap.
  • Pick up cheap travel size bag to keep the activities in and keep it in a accessible place to grab it quickly before leaving the house - or even to keep in your vehicle, diaper bag, where ever.

Want to make a quick busy bag activity? I found this one on Pinterest! Sophie plays with these at home and brings them out with her. They have been shapes, necklaces, towers, a phone (yes a phone), and anything else that her imagination creates.

You will need a glue gun, small circle velcro, and popsicle sticks. (Purchased at dollarama)

The velcro will have sticky back but it's important to glue them in place so that the velcro stays.

When gluing the velcro on the popsicle sticks glue put the rough sides of the velcro on one end and the soft sides on the other end.

Once the glue drys you are good to go!

Chocolate chickpea dip - a delicious healthy dessert! #protein #healthy #yummy #chocolate #dessert #ateitall

In my continuous search for recipes to try that are healthy and tasty I came across chickpea dip and figured this is something that I have got to try!!
From start to finish this took roughly 20 minutes to make and it turned out not too bad!

You will need:
  • 1- 16oz can of chickpeas
  • 1/4 cup almonds.
  • 1/2 vanilla soy milk
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 2 tablespoons coconut palm sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon
Directions:
Drain and rinse chickpeas. Put them to the side.
Put almonds in food processor and process until almonds are the consistency of almond butter.
Add in all other ingredients into food processor including the chickpeas and periodically stop to scrape sides with a baking spatula.
Once all ingredients are mixed together and mixture is smooth it is ready to eat.

Transfer to bowl and serve with graham crackers, fruit, pretzels or whatever you like.

My next one to try - this snickerdoodle version!!

DIY snack bins for hungry toddlers! #hungrytoddler #snack #yum #hungry #hangry

Carter eats like a Hobbit. Before he is even finishing his meals, he is asking "What's for snack??".
One of the things that I have started to do is making a snack bin for a last minute top up or something quick to scoop into a container for when we are going out and about. It's easy, relatively healthy, and something that both Carter and Sophie love because they get to pick out some of the items that go into the snack bin on a trip to Bulk Barn. Also it's a quick fix for when the #hangry starts to set in.

The container just needs a light shake to mix everything up before taking some out and it's all good to go!

What's in this snack bin?

Pretzels
Almonds
Yogurt covered raisins
Craisins
Dark chocolate cocoa nibs
Banana chips

Buying bulk is a good way to fill up these snack bins on a budget, with a good selection of ingredients. Go here to get $3.00 off of your next purchase of $10.00 or more at Bulk Barn until March 26th, 2015!!

National Pancake Day @ IHOP & DIY pancake mix! #breakfast #camping2015 #pancakes #IHOP

Today is National Pancake Day for IHOP and that means a FREE short stack of pancakes! All you need to do is go in and order a short stack. All IHOP asks is that you make a donation to the Children's Miracle Network! If you can't make it in for FREE pancakes, check out the DIY pancake mix that I use at home!!

To make DIY pancake mix, you will need:
4 cups of flour (I use whole wheat)
3 tablespoons of baking powder
2 teaspoons of baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
2 1/2 tablespoons of sugar (I use coconut palm sugar)

Mix all ingredients in a bowl and then store in an air tight container or freezer bag.

To make pancakes you will need these ingredients:

1 cup of pancake mix
1 egg
1 cup milk
1 teaspoon of butter or oil (I use coconut oil - measured when melted)

This will yield 4-6 pancakes!

Try adding these ingredients to your pancakes...

  • A table spoon of flax seed to the mix for more fibre
  • Mashed up banana
  • Shredded dark chocolate (not only yummy but better for you)
  • Blueberries

~Enjoy~
